it's the summer of 1896 and the city of chicago has either become the most amazing place to be or the worst-depending on who you are.
your task is to produce a newspaper that covers one day in the "city of broad shoulders".
What your newspaper should look like:
-A real paper from one day in Chicago (must be in the summer of 1896)
(EITHER PRINTED OR ONLINE VERSION)
-Produce a minimum of 12 total articles (3 from each section of the paper)
-Each individual group member will create at least 3 authentic articles
*each article that is created must also be accompanied by an authentic primary source picture from that time period
Example: (if a member creates an editorial on child labor then it must also have a picture TAKEN during that time period with a caption added to explain time, location, background)
*each article should be SEVERAL paragraphs long and creative!

Issues that must be addressed SOMEWHERE in the articles/sections above:
- city abuses of sewage, water, trash, tenement slims, housing issues, infrastructure, population, fires
- Immigration, political machine, Nativism
- Social programs of temperance, birth control, philanthropy, activism
- Big Business: conditions in the workplace, child labor, Robber Barons, wages, profits, monopolies, trusts
- Labor Unions: AFL, Knights of Labor, Socialist groups, strikes, Haymarket Riots, Pullman Strike
You will have time in class through Wednesday, Nov. 29th to complete this task, it will be due by the end of class on that day.
